Supporting Our Veterans

Arizona is home to many active and retired military Veterans. With support from generous donors, ACF Affiliates in Cochise and Yuma counties have undertaken initiatives to help meet the needs of these worthy individuals.

As Veterans return home from active duty and the front lines of battle, their physical, psychological and financial needs are becoming better understood and warrant a strong response from the philanthropic sector and the community.

Cochise Veterans project

Under the leadership of the Arizona Community Foundation of Cochise, donors in Cochise County are pooling their gifts to support a field of interest fund to serve the needs of local Veterans and their families.

Agencies in Cochise County that provide services to Veterans and their families participated in a survey aimed at determining the unmet needs of Veterans and the obstacles they face. The study reveals that Cochise County military Veterans are experiencing significant difficulty in accessing services, training, housing and job opportunities. These and other findings are outlined in the report entitled Cochise Veterans Project: Unmet Needs of Veterans [PDF, 607KB], provided by the Cochise College Center for Economic Research in partnership with the Arizona Community Foundation of Cochise.

Nineteen percent of Cochise County residents over the age of 18 are Veterans, and one in four has a service-related disability.

Two funds serve Veterans in Yuma County

The Yuma Veterans Fund began with a $10,000 challenge gift from an anonymous Yuma donor who is a Veteran. Every two-dollar donation to the Yuma Veterans Fund is matched with an additional dollar. The Fund will be a permanent source of support for the needs of Yuma Veterans, with grants awarded through input from an expert local committee.

In addition, the Yuma Veterans Recoverable Loan Project Fund makes small loans to provide immediate support to deserving veterans with an honorable discharge. Funds can cover rent and utility deposits, transportation costs to receive medical care, medical emergencies, school expenses, and other critical services. The loans are repaid to the Fund to then support other Veterans.
